While the big summer holiday might still be months away, the wintery months are a great time of year for long weekend city breaks. Whether you’re hopping on a plane or a train, getting away for a few days in one of Europe’s most lively cities is a great way to escape. But the problem with every city break is no matter how much you try, packing light is always the hardest part! So here are my top tips on how to pack light and get the most out of you luggage space!
1. Buy the Right Travel Case
Buying the right bag/case to begin with is the most important thing. Most airlines have pretty much the same or similar restrictions when it comes to cabin baggage sizes. Standard is around 55cm x 35cm x 25cm, so when you are buying your case make sure it’s around this size otherwise you won’t be allowed it. Also the budget airlines, RyanAir, Jet2 and FlyBe all have a carry on weight limit of 10kg so make sure you weigh before you go and choose carefully. EasyJet has no weight limit – so if you’re flying with them go nuts as long as the case closes #FTW. (But remember a lot of the budget airlines want you to be able to put your handbag inside your carry on, so don’t bring a big handbag as well.)
2. Plan your Oufits by Day
The key to packing light is basically the same as creating a capsule wardrobe. Pick a base colour to start with brown or black and then build a few interchangeable outfits from there. Stick to one style such as winter floral, embroidery or animal print and pick a few pieces that will go along with that. You are not going to have time (or space) to be showing off all the latest trends from the runway in one weekend. Pick what you will need to wear based on the activities your doing and try turning day outfits into night outfits but changing up your hair and makeup. It’s also best to wear your heaviest items when you travel (e.g. boots, jeans, thick knit jumper) so that you have more space in your bag.
3. Minimise your Accessories
For a 2-3 day trip you do not need to bring all your crown jewels – (I know, I’m mean). But picking a few key pieces that will go with all your outfits is so much better then bringing along masses of jewelry for each outfit. Here are few gorgeous findings like these Chlobo boho bracelets, which are perfect for taking on long weekends as they’re so versatile, and will go with just about everything you would bring with you.
4. Pre-Pack your Lotions and Potions
Having a pre-packed wash bag in your suitcase that is all set and ready to go is a really handy tip for helping pack more smoothly. Having your travel size shampoo, conditioner and body lotion all ready filled and it the plastic zip lock will stop you from quickly throwing in the big bottles when you remember them on your way out. You can also buy them when you’re out there, but this can sometimes be expensive. Alternatively if you can get away without washing your hair for a few days, then wash it before you go and bring dry shampoo for the trip.
5. Roll up your Clothes
Once you have your holiday capsule wardrobe the best way to pack them is to roll up your clothes and put them in a zip lock bag. Packing your clothes this way will make sure you get the most of your space. You can even spray some lavender linen spray in the bag before you pack to ensure your clothes smell fresh when you arrive.
Bonus Travel Tips:
- For longer trips bring a small extension bar with you, and plug all your eletricals in that. Then you only need one plug adapter.
- Curl/Straight your hair before you go and then try some different hair braiding techniques so that you don’t have to bring curlers and straighteners along.
- Carry some money in your bra while you are out and about in case of emergency.
